IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) – Soft Tissue Mobilization using Special Tools

What is it? IASTM is a massage technique that involves the use of special tools, often made of stainless steel. Despite their aggressive appearance, their work is quite gentle: it involves repetitive kneading motions on muscles and rubbing on tendons and ligaments. Today, IASTM is a collective concept.

How does it work? IASTM techniques are performed along the muscle fibers and towards the nearest lymph nodes. Therefore, IASTM:

  • Supports lymphatic drainage and reduces swelling
  • Eliminates pain
  • Relaxes muscles, improves the trophism of soft tissues, and accelerates post-exercise recovery. The tools allow stretching the subcutaneous fascia, preventing adhesions after treatments, injuries, and burns.

How is the treatment done? IASTM is often performed on limbs, around joints, or along the edges of muscles. The muscle is gently lengthened, and the treatment begins. A small amount of special wax is applied to ensure smooth tool movement on the skin.

Does it hurt? No. Similar to classic massage, the intensity of pressure in IASTM gradually increases, from superficial movements to more intense ones. Pointed redness on the skin, which often occurs during the treatment, is not dangerous, does not always occur, and disappears without symptoms after 3-4 days.

Duration of the treatment: No more than 5-7 minutes per area.
